Cycling Holidays France - Cycle to Villandry

Loire Valley Cycling

The Loire Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty and a cycling paradise.

Our single centre cycling holidays are based in the heart of the Loire Valley and cover a 100km stretch of this UNESCO designated world heritage site.  With  so much crammed into this area, a point to point bike tour is unnecessary – so relax and let Loire Life Cycling show you around.

Beautiful Towns

We’re close to Saumur, a jewel on the Loire with a Chateaux and winding streets of white stoned medieval houses, wide boulevards and quality cafes & restaurants .  Saumur is the home of the French cavalry, the national horse riding school and a major producer mushrooms and of white, red, rose and sparkling wine – the famous Cremanat de Loire.

The historic towns of Chinon, Bourgueil and the beautiful troglodyte villages of Candes St Martin, Montsoreau and Turquant also await you!  The quiet back roads offer some of the best Loire valley cycling that can be found!

We are surrounded by Chateaux and our cycle tours can visit Villandry (world famous gardens), Azay-le-Rideau (dreamily set on a lake), Rigny-Ussé (the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty fairy-tale), Chinon (with its Joan of Arc connections), Saumur, Montsoreau (the only Chateau actually built on the banks of the Loire), Gizeux & Langeais (with the oldest castle keep in Europe at 992AD).  You can even cycle four Loire Chateaux in one day!

The Anjou-Touraine Regional Park

The area is designated as the Anjou-Touraine Regional Park.  Anjou’s heyday was the middle ages and Anjou is the spiritual home of the Plantagenet kings of England & France and Fontevraud Abbey and the town of Chinon are steeped in medieval history.  This area of the Loire is covered with cycling routes which criss-cross the countryside and intersect with the famous Loire a Velo cycle trail – which runs the entire length of the Loire river.   Cycling the Loire a Velo in the Saumur area is considered by many to be one of the most varied and interesting parts of the entire cycle route.

For wine connoisseurs this region is home to some of the Loire’s best appellations.  Rich and fruity Cabernet Franc reds from Bourgueil & Chinon, the rosés of Anjou and the Chenin-Blanc whites and sparkling wines of Saumur.

Quiet Roads for Loire Valley Cycling

The region is lightly populated, the road traffic is light at any time of the year and you’ll be amazed by the sheer number of quiet roads that criss-cross the countryside – with an amazing sight around each corner.  Small manor houses, beautiful churches, Troglodyte villages are all here to be discovered.

It’s an area you won’t quickly forget and with so much to see it’s easy to understand why so many of our clients return for more Loire valley cycling!
