Cycling Holidays in the Loire Valley, France from LoireLife - Frequently Asked Questions

To help you get more of a flavour of what we offer on our french cycling holiday in the Loire Valley, here are some questions we are frequently asked:

Is it best to bring my own bike or use yours?

We are able to provide good quality touring bikes , sized according to your needs and impeccably maintained. People always feel more at home on their own bikes and so it's no problem to bring your own.

What type of bikes do you provide?

We provide hybrid style bikes, with a comfortable upright seating position and front suspension.  The tyres are not as thin as those on a racing bike but not as thick as those on a mountain bike.  See our section on bikes.

Can I start a cycling holiday on a day other than Sunday?

At the moment our ‘Discovery’ tour only starts on a Sunday - we take the evening off on Saturday!  We are able to  be more flexible with our ‘Bed. Breakfast & Bike’ holidays - contact us for details.

How fit do I need to be?

To get the most out of your holiday you would need to be comfortable with cycling 45kms in one day, split either side of lunch over an itinerary that is mostly flat and at a pace that is quite relaxed.  Many guests are anxious about distance, but they are always surprised at the mileage they cover without noticing it!  This is an amazing area for relaxed cycle touring and don’t forget that your cycling is punctuated by frequent stops for food and to see the sights.

Are you accessible if I'm arriving from outside Europe?

Definitely. It is possible to catch the high speed train (TGV) at Charles de Gaulle Airport (Paris) to St Pierre des Corps station in Tours.   Change train at St Pierre des Corps for Saumur (you don’t even need to change platform) which is a further 25 minutes.  We can then arrange a transfer  to us at Gue de Ray.  Click here for more details.

What should I wear?

Lightweight, summer sports clothing suit the conditions we generally experience, while padded shorts will really make your life easier. Bring water/wind proof tops just in case and lightweight trainers are fine.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes - you need to be able to provide us with proof of your travel insurance, which needs to cover you for cycling while on holiday, medical expenses and repatriation to your home country.

What happens if the weather makes cycling impossible?

If the weather is awful and cycling isn’t an option, we will take you to a local attraction or head out for some wine tasting.  We will ensure that the day is not wasted!  In three years, we’ve only lost two mornings due to bad weather.
