This is just a selection of cycling routes available on our Loire Valley Taster:
Jules Desbois, Breil & Gizeux (36km)
Idyllic cycling through traffic free countryside and the chance to discover hidden
gems that you won’t find in the guide books! Jules Desbois was a contemporary of
the sculptor Rodin and his home town of Parcay-les-Pins has built a gallery and museum
to celebrate his work - an unexpected find in a small rural farming village. The
Chateaux of Breil and Gizeux each have unique heritages that make them fascinating
to visit. In both cases you will be welcomed by members of the hereditary families
that have owned the chateaux for hundreds of years.
Lakeside at Les Loges(25kms)
A charming cycle through the Anjou countryside to a tiny restaurant perched alongside
a forest lake. Enjoy a lazy three course lunch before cycling back through shady
forest groves.
Bourgueil (35kms)
Ride through hunting forests and rolling vineyards to the market town of Bourgueil,
famous for its Cabernet Franc red wine. Explore the lively market, the Benedictine
abbey and the wine museum and tasting cave. Eat a lazy lunch in Bourgueil or buy
a ready filled baguette to eat hidden away amongst the vines.
Langeais (46kms)
Approaching the medieval town of Langeais along a shaded wooded valley, explore the
11th century castle commanding views over the river Loire. Sample a fantastic patisserie
at the coffee house opposite and take a picnic down to the riverside. One of our
favourite rides!
Parc Maupassant (50kms)
A peaceful ride through forests and orchards brings you to the 22 hectares of reclaimed
gardens from the now vanished, Chateau de la Thibaudiere. At Parc Maupassant you
can tie up your bike and enjoy the restored gardens and take lunch in the brasserie
or set yourself up a picnic purchased from the nearby boulangerie.
Saumurois (65kms)
Cycle through ancient hamlets, fruit orchards and market gardens to the pretty town
of Saumur on the banks of La Loire. Discover Saumur’s famous sparkling white wines,
its vast caves used for mushroom cultivation, the distillery of Combier and enjoy
the views from its fairy-tale chateau high above the town. On your way home explore
the medieval manor house at Launay, a fairytale castle hidden amongst the trees.
Le Loir and Le Lude (65kms)
Head north to the Loir valley, smaller brother to the Loire. The market town of
Le Lude is home to one of the most northerly of the Loire Valley’s chateau - built
in an enviable location on the banks of Le Loir. A more challenging cycle ride, as
the area is covered with small river valleys which our route follows and criss-crosses.
The reward is a fantastic route with interest around every corner - and a landscape
that hasn’t changed in hundreds of years.
For those wishing to explore further we have cycle routes to Chinon (80km) and Villandry/Azay
le Rideau (85km).
