Cycling Holidays France - Cycle to Villandry

Loire Valley Discovery Cycling Tour

Self-guided and fully supported, centre-based and filled with the very best of the Loire Valley.

Since 2009, we’ve run this unique centre-based Loire Valley Cycling Tour.  Exploring the Loire Valley, between Angers and Tours in an area known as Anjou-Touraine it’s a fantastic cycling experience.

The cycling is easy and self-guided as you cycle by Loire Chateaux, vineyards, Troglodyte villages and rural France –  ‘La France Profonde‘.   The Loire Valley Discovery cycling tour includes a unique meal and wine tasting in a barrel cellar and the chance to take in the local tradition of ‘Le Menu Ouvrier‘.  (See the itinerary below).

The cycling holidays are popular with guests from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and UK and with so much to see it’s not unusual for guests, even from Australia to return for a second or third visit. We’re proud of our testimonials click here and also our more recent TripAdvisor reviews.

Centre-based is best!

All this cycling, yet you can stay in one comfortable location for your entire cycling holiday.

We’ve developed a home from home at Gue de Ray with great facilities.

So unpack (and use the laundry if you wish), catch up with friends and family over the high speed WiFi, relax in the hot-tub, swim in the pool and make yourself hot drinks at your convienience.  Click here for more on Gue de Ray.

Of course, being centre-based if you want to miss a day’s cycling and lounge by the pool, that’s OK by us.

Cycling for your supper

The evening meals are all freshly prepared using local produce and accompanied by specially selected local wines.

We also make an effort to cater for dietary requirements, so vegetarians etc receive imaginative meals!  Click here for more on our cuisine.

This cycling tour explores the Loire Valley in an area known as Anjou-Tourraine, as far as Le Thoureil in the west and Villandry in the east, a 100km stretch of the Loire Valley.

Day 1 Welcome – Our home is your home!

If required, transfers are provided from Saumur railway station with a short journey to your accommodation at Gue de Ray. We will equip everyone with a suitable bike and all accessories and make sure everything is ready for the week ahead.

There’s plenty of time to unpack, settle in with a glass of bubbly and meet fellow guests over a welcome evening meal.

Day 2 “The Loire Chateaux” (26kms – 50 kms)

Cycle back in time to the medieval town of Langeais crossing to the southern bank of the Loire. Choose from a selection of routes and see one or all of the chateaux of Villandry, Chatonniere and Azay-le-Rideau, each one individual, but all stunning in their beauty. Your day is finished with a mini-bus return back to Gue de Ray.

Day 3 “Vines, Wines & Markets” (35 kms)

Cycle through forests and vineyards to the weekly farmers’ market at Bourgueil a great place for assembling a picnic! Continue to Chouze-sur-Loire, for a coffee on the banks of the Loire before heading home via the St Nicolas de Bourgueil vineyards and the lake at Les Loges.

Day 4 “Rural Anjou & Le Menu Ouvrier” (30 kms)

A circular bike route through local hunting forests to the Chateau and Parc du Lathan at Breil. Picnic at the peaceful lake and nature reserve at Rille or learn the secret of the French Menu Ouvrier (worker’s menu). Finish off this fantastic route with a visit to the village of Gizeux and its Chateau famous for 17th century wall paintings.

Day 5 “Fine Wine and Fine Food – Le Tasting Room” (45 kms)

Following the Authion river, before crossing the Loire via the impressive bridge at Gennes. Follow La Loire a Velo cycle way to the tiny hamlet of Le Thoureil, where Cathy and Nigel of Le Tasting Room, will host you for an afternoon of relaxed wine tasting combined with some fabulous food – enlightening you to the world of Loire Valley wines.
