Gourmet Loire Valley Bike Tour – The Itinerary
Day 1 Saturday – Welcome!
Arrive by car or let us transfer you by minibus from Saumur railway station. Unpack, settle in and meet the team and your fellow cyclists over aperitifs.
At the same time we’ll equip you with your bike, take you through the equipment and explain how the cycle routes work.
Then there’s plenty of time to chat and make new friends over your first Gourmet meal of the week!
Day 2 Sunday – Chinon (50 kms)
A flat start to the week as you cycle along the banks of the Loire and Vienne rivers to Chinon. An imposing hilltop fortress sits atop the medieval town, associated with Kings of France and England and Joan of Arc.
Day 3 Monday – Picnic in the Vines (25 or 45 kms)
Pass the riverside chateau of Montsoreau and explore the beautiful riverside village of Candes St Martin (designated a Les Plus Beaux Villages de France). Grab a coffee outside the majestic Priory before taking a cycle route along the plateau of the Touraine & Chinon vineyards.
We’ve arranged for you to be a guest of a local winemaking Count, and at the ancestral Chateau he will provide a guided tour of the vineyard and provide a picnic to be taken with his wine, amongst his vines.
If you’ve still the energy you can return via the huge Abbey Royale at Fontevraud – the largest in Europe and the eerie resting place of Henry II & Richard the Lionheart. If you’ve indulged in too much picnic then you’ve another chance to see the Abbey later in the week!
Day 4 – Tuesday – Bourgueil Market (33 or 45 kms)
Stay on the northern side of the Loire river on this stunning bike ride through the Cabernet Franc vineyards of Bourgueil. Take coffee and enjoy the weekly market at Bourgueil while picking up a baguette for lunch. Ride out further east, seeing the Chateaux of the wine domains, before eating your picnic at one of the most progressive Chateau wineries in the Loire Valley. Take time to explore the Chateau and try some wine, before turning for home and enjoying more big skies and magnificent vistas. A flat, biking paradise!
Day 5 – Wednesday – Chateau de Brezé (40kms)
Cycle through the Saumur Champigny vineyards to the Chateau at Brezé, with Europe’s deepest dry moat and a network of underground tunnels – there’s more Chateau underground than above!
En-route you can head across to the Abbey Royale at Fontevraud if you missed it earlier in the week
The route takes you right past the Cave de Vignerons de Saumur, where you can try the entire range of Saumur wines and enjoy a guided tour of the winery.
Day 6 – Thursday – Underground Saumur! (40 kms)
Follow the Loire river to white stoned Saumur – the equestrian centre of France, home to the Cadre Noir riding school, the french cavalry and a producer of superb white sparkling wines – Crement de Loire.
Take in an underground cycle tour of the vast wine caverns on a vintage bike, before sampling the sparkling wines. Head back to base through one of the best segments of the Loire a Velo cycleway – stunning!
Day 7 – Friday – Chateau Ussé (45 kms)
Cross the Loire and the Vienne rivers and take a flat route to meet the Loire a Velo cycleway, arriving at Chateau Rigny d’Ussé to be rewarded with a stunning view on arrival. The inspiration for Sleeping Beauty, Ussé is a dreamy mix of turrets and battlements – all you imagine the Loire Chateaux to be!
Day 8 – Saturday – Departure
After breakfast we take you to Saumur railway station before saying farewell and bonne route!
