Loire Life Cycling in Greece!

November 20, 2019 by Jon Lethbridge No Comment

No, we’ve not opened a new Cycling Holiday base in Greece!  We’ve just spent a lovely week taking a breather and enjoying some road and mountain bike cycling on the Greek island of Rhodes.

We were lucky and had late October temperatures in the high twenties, perfect blue skies for the entire week and able to cycle every day.

It was fantastic to sit back and let someone else provide the bikes and routes in the day and the meal in the evening!

Better than the Loire Valley?!

The main differences we noticed between cycling in Greece and the Loire Valley?

The hills!  We didn’t realise how mountainous the middle of Rhodes is and took a while to get used to hairpin ascents and descents.  The Loire Valley really is an easy place to cycle around and even our hardest local hill couldn’t compare.  We loved the views and the descents, but only once did Jon get off in disgust, as another hairpin came into view – he swore his Garmin was telling him he’d arrived at the top already!

We’d still say there is nowhere on earth like France for riding empty, quiet and well maintained roads, but in late October when the weather is on the turn in Northern Europe we’d definitely recommend Rhodes – the coastal roads are busy but if you don’t mind heading into the hills you’ll find peace and quiet and miles of empty roads.

New road bikes!

We love our Orbea road bikes at home, but Ali fell in love with the Cannondale Synapse road bike she was riding – you know when you suddenly find a geometry that fits you perfectly?

So, first job when we get back is to track down the exact same model and add it into our road bike rental fleet – we’ll let you know how we get on.
