Now ten years old, the Loire a Velo, the biggest marked cycling route in France continues to be a great success. This year with great weather through late Summer and Autumn, La Loire a Velo will have entertained more than 850,000 cyclists.
Tourism is an important and growing sector in the Loire Valley. In 2013, tourism generated revenues of 2.6 billion Euros, which in the Loire Valley puts it behind the food industry at 2.8 billion Euros but in front of agriculture at 2.3 billion Euros.
While the Atlantic coast is still the major tourism area in Pays de la Loire (creating 43% of total turnover), Loire Valley tourism further inland continues to grow and the regional tourist board estimates that the larger towns on the Loire à Vélo (Saumur, Angers, Nantes and Saint-Nazaire) accounted for nearly a third of all tourism activity.
